yoshitoshi ABe (he prefers his name to be written with odd capitalisation) was born in 1971 and studied painting at Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music. After he graduated he became a freelance designer, working on several computer games and drawing doujinshi (self published comics) in his spare time. His career really took off when an anime producer saw his website and, impressed by his unique artistic style, hired him to work as a designer on a new series called Serial Experiments Lain. His unusual but highly original character designs played a major part in the series' success and his undeniable talent has gained him more creative input with |
each new project. After providing designs and concept for the sci-fi sitcom NieA_7 (for which he drew a promotional manga) one of ABe's early doujinshi, 'New Feathers in Old Home', was developed into the anime series Haibane Renmei, with ABe working on the screenplay and design. Since Haibane Renmei, ABe has only worked on one
more anime project - the dark sci-fi Texhnolyze - but has been
quite active in manga and doujinshi. His most visible work since
Texhnolyze has been the manga Wasteland, which is
serialised in the manga anthology Robot. He has also
revisited Haibane Renmei with several new doujinshi volumes
following the end of the anime series, and quite recently completed a
new book of Serial Experiments Lain artwork. Filmography (Designer, Characters & Settings): Serial Experiments Lain Bibliography Shooting Star |
