If you like anime comedy then you MUST own Excel Saga. It
is the most fast-paced, speed line filled, blink-and-you’ll-miss a gag comedy I
have ever seen.
It is difficult to describe exactly why Excel Saga is so good as my description
above could be for anime comedy! What makes Excel Saga different
though is that
all the episodes manage to keep up the same standard throughout and you do not
get the occasional episodes which drag or has a different level of humour (i.e.
– dirty) to the others. This is surprising as each episode is a parody of
a certain genre – one might be a sci-fi, the other a love story and another survival
drama. The parody will not dominate the episode so don’t worry if you think
Excel Saga just lampoons something each episode and doesn’t have it’s own humour
because it does by bucket loads! The humour is fresh and fast without slowing
up and while taking the mick out of certain anime it also rips it out off
several American films too, which is always good.
The animation is of high quality and always matches the insane dialogue by
ensuring it is coupled with insane animation to match. It features explosions,
speed lines and bullet-time and they are never overdone and the jokes are not
played upon do much.
All in all Excel Saga is the most insane, hilarious and side-splitting piece of
genius you’ll ever witness.
Extras
Among all the usual extras all the DVDs in this boxset contain the
superb pop-up cultural notes. These notes pop whenever a parody or
reference in a episode and explains the origin of them. The
fascinating feature is revolutionary and it's originality matches the
originality of the series perfectly.
