College dropout goes travels the country taking on odd jobs and getting into 'heated' situations!  Sound like a '70's 'bawdy' comedy, probably starring Robin Askwith?  Well, it is and it isn't.

Golden Boy is very funny.  In fact it is frequently hilarious!   Super-intelligent idiot (he does manage to be both) Kintaro Oe is a relatively likeable character, he's enthusiastic but a little perverted - especially when it comes to toilets - and you always seem to want him to come out on top.  In places a complete parody of anime, Golden Boy never takes itself seriously - something which is fantastically shown when arching electricity erupts behind Kintaro as he asks for someone's autograph!

Golden Boy is packed with moments like that, and the character art becomes extremely detailed whenever speed lines appear behind characters.  There are some extremely random moments of comedy (Kintaro's method of learning computing is hilarious!) and some of the situations Kintaro gets into are very funny.

Why then the reference to bawdy comedies?  Well one thing about Golden Boy is that some of the humour is a bit, erm, dodgy...

This is unfortunately where it sometimes falls down.  The sexual humour is sometimes really funny (particularly in the second episode) but most of the time is either too crude or heavy handed.   One of the main problems is Kintaro's toilet fetish - funny once, but every episode?  errr, no.  This is a real shame and affects the quality as, out of the six episodes, about half are hilarious whereas the other half - apart from a couple of great moments - fall a bit flat.  It's ironic, considering the emphasis on sexual humour, that the least crude episode (the final one - set in an Animation studio) is probably the best.

All in all, well worth buying as the comedy outweighs the crudeness and it is excellent to watch with some mates after a couple of pints, but if you're easily offended steer clear...

Extras

Clean opening and closing sequences, hilariously the ending sequence is just the credits against a black background so the clean sequence is just a black screen with the music playing!  Pointless!!
